Potty Training, Twin Edition
This past weekend, we officially jumped into potty training with the twins. No slow build-up, no easing in — just a deep breath, a cleared schedule, and a lot of faith in snacks and patience.
Was it glamorous? No.
Was it frustrating? Yes.
Did we question our choices about five times a day? Absolutely.
But we also had some wins — which is saying something with two toddlers at once.
The approach we followed:
We didn’t wing it completely. We followed the Tinkle & Toot Potty Training method, which focuses on consistency, readiness, and realistic expectations — especially for busy families.
If you’re curious, this is what we used as our guide:
Sarah was amazing walking us through the program and with any questions we had afterwards! I don’t think we could of walked into potty training blindly, especially with twins, so this course helped for sure!!
What I loved most was that it was just a clear plan that made us feel like we weren’t guessing every step of the way.
What we actually did:
We definitely cleared the weekend schedule and pulled the kids out of school on friday. No errands, no plans, no cooking even really. We also definitely lowered expectations (this matters).
Day 1 we did a total naked day for the boys and part of day 2. We had a ton of accidents on day 1 but I am told thats normal! I was being tested to my fullest! hah! Then half of day 2 once they got the hang of it a tad more we put on just pants, no undies. Then on day 3 we introduced some undies. This is what worked for us and everyone is different but Tinkle & Toot’s course walks you through it all!!
For rewards, each time they went potty they got a token to put in their little jar (linked below) and a mini tiny cookie. Once they filled their jar up they got a hot wheels car. So far, its working!!
A Few Takeaways
Twins potty training isn’t for the faint of heart if I’m being honest, but you just have to stay consistent
Accidents are part of the deal
Doing it together actually helped them encourage each other
Now we are still struggling with them pooping in the potty but that will come with time
They do wear a pull up or “night time undies” during nap and bedtime, but the rest of the day is their undies
We’re still very much in it, but getting through the first two weekends felt like a big win.
If you’re thinking about starting, I hope this makes it feel a little less intimidating and a little more manageable.
And if you’re in the thick of it too? Sending good vibes!! We’re all just figuring it out!!
Products We Used
Below is what we purchased ourselves for potty training the boys (Tinkle & Toot also has her best suggested items as well on her site)
Child-sized potty seat (one that goes on your actual toilet since I couldn’t get over the thought of doing a mini potty then dumping it out constantly)
Step stools for the big potty
Water wipes (the ones they have always used but we don’t flush these)
Training underwear
Potty books
Potty Jar (not forever, just for momentum)
